The 1841 census recorded John Hames, aged 9 years and born in East Lothian, living in St John's Haddington in the High Street with his parents and family.

The 1851 census for Haddington, East Lothian, recorded John Haimes living at the home of his parents in the High Street. He was recorded as 18 years of age and born in Haddington. He worked as a tailor.

In the Hawick 1856 birth certificate of his son George, John Haimes was recorded as a journeyman tailor.

John Haimes, a tailor, gave notice of the birth of his daughter Helen at Haddington on 12 February 1859. He was recorded as a tailor in the birth certificates of his son Robert in 1861 and his daughter Margaret Anderson Haimes in 1864.

John Haimes gave notice of the birth of his son Richard before Thomas Kempe Registrar on 20 May 1869. John himself was recorded in the birth certificate as a tailor journeyman. The same information about himself was recorded when he notified the same registrar at Haddington on 1 December 1870 of the birth of his son George.

The 1871 census for Haddington Burgh recorded John Haimes as the head of the household living at Gowl Close. With him lived his wife and 5 children. John Haimes was a tailor by occupation and was noted as being 39 years of age and born in Dalkeith.

The marriage was solemnised according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of Scotland. J. MacRae Minister of Hawick presided. The witnesses were Robert Anderson, mason, and Margaret Anderson.

John Haimes, of 23 High Street Hawick was 21 years of age and worked as a journeyman tailor. He was unmarried and had been born and registered on 2 March 1834 at Haddington. His parents were both living.

Mary Anderson of 27 High Street Hawick was 21 years old and worked as a domestic servant. She was a spinster. She had been born but not registered on 14 December 1833 at Hawick. Her parents, Robert Anderson and Helen Jane Bell Johnstone, were living.

The marriage was registered at Hawick on 9 June 1855, Anthony Dodds being the signing registrar. 1
