Mary Haimes gave notice of the birth of her son Robert before the registrar, Thomas Henderson, at Haddington on 25 December 1861. His father was recorded as a tailor.

The 1871 census for Haddington recorded Robert Haimes living with his family at Gowl Close. He was aged 11 years and had been born in Haddington. ^{1 2}
