SANDILANDS, Alexander Blacksmith ^{1 2}

   Cause of his death was typhus fever.^{3 4}

   Another name for Alexander was SANDILANS, Alexander.⁵

  General Notes:

In UK and US Directories 1680-1830, made available by Ancestry.co.uk, a man called Alexander Sandilands was listed in Edinburgh, in 1815, 1816, and 1817 in The Post-Office Annual Directory, from Whitsunday 1815, to Whitsunday 1818. He was resident in Edinburgh and working as a smith. He was located at Toddrick's Wynd in the town.

In the death information about Alexander, it was noted that he was a smith by occupation, and aged 57 years at the time of death. There is a brief entry for Alexander in the Admissions Book of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary that reads under the heading"Admitted 20th March 1841":

A second entry in the "Dismissal or Event" Book reads:

"Date of Event Nature of Disease Buried Died

In 1867 when his son, James, married, Alexander was recorded in his marriage certificate as a blacksmith.

In the death certificate of his son, James, in 1882 Alexander, already deceased, was recorded as having been a blacksmith. This was the case also in the death certificate of daughter, Isabella, in 1885, and his daughter, Catherine, in 1895. ^{1 2 3 6 7}

TODDRICK'S WYND

This Wynd or narrow alley is situated on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, and is normally referred to as a "close". Going east towards Canongate, it can be found past Blackfriars Street and Niddry Street, on the right beside South Gray's Close.

"Dating back to 1456, the location was the backdrop to a fateful day. On February 9th 1567, Queen Mary and her train were coming up the Wynd, following a visit to Darnley at Kirk o' Field.

At that very time, James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell and his accomplices, were making their way down this narrow alley with explosives, designed for Darnley's assassination.

The Wynd was one of the 'bounds' of the Town Guard in 1685."

Alexander married Isabel SCOTT, daughter of William SCOTT and Janet JACK, on 27 July 1805 in Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Isabel SCOTT was baptised on 8 April 1787 in Kirktown parish, Roxburghshire, Scotland ^{8 9}.)
