The 1841 census for 6 Newport Street in Edinburgh recorded a woman in the 55-59 years age range, Isabella Sandilands, living with a small child of 2 years, Alexander Nisbet, and five other young people, from 13 years of age to 25 years, called Sandilands, probably her sons and daughter. She had been born outside the 1841 census county, Midlothian, in which she lived.
Isabel's death certificate has not been found in the statutory certificates from 1855 on. It is distictly possible then that she died between 1841 and 1855. 2

NEWPORT STREET
"Built in 1855, and named after the second basin of the Union Canal called Port Hamilton, built in 1823 after Port Hopetoun. No houses remain on this street and it is was redeveloped in the late 1980s. It is now part of the Millennium Walkway running down the side of the EICC."

"Castlebarns, in St Cuthbert's or West Church parish, would have been considered at the end of the 18th century to be a district in the suburbs of Edinburgh. It was situated about a quarter of a a mile from the West-port, by which you could leave the city of Edinburgh to travel west. On a modern town plan of Edinburgh, Morrison Street near Haymarket, roughly delineates the area.
Isabel married Alexander SANDILANDS Blacksmith, son of John SANDILANDS Upholsterer in Edinburgh and Katharine MINTO, on 27 July 1805 in Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Alexander SANDILANDS Blacksmith was born about 1785 4 and died on 29 March 1841 in Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, Scotland 4.). The cause of his death was typhus fever.
