  General Notes:

The 1861 census for Esperstone Lime Works at Borthwick Midlothian recorded Hugh Curran living with his parents there. Hugh had been born in Westruther Berwickshire and was 3 years old.

In 1871 the census for Liberton Midlothian recorded Hugh Curran living with his family at Old Dalkeith Road Little France. Hugh had been born in Westruther Berwickshire and was recorded as 13 years of age. He was an agricultural labourer.

When his daughter Ann was born in December 1880, Hugh Cairns, who was the informant of the birth, was recorded as a 'Quarterman on Farm".

The 1881 census recorded a Hugh Cairns and his wife Eleanor and daughter Annie living at Cairnie Hinds House, Inveresk, near Edinburgh. Hugh was recorded as aged 24 years and his birth place was recorded as Jordanhall, Edinburgh. He was a ploughman. 2 6 7


Hugh married Ellenor HAIMES (DNA Link), daughter of Andrew HAIMES Candle Maker, DNA Link and Ann NEILSON, on 4 June 1880 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland.1 2 (Ellenor HAIMES (DNA Link) was born on 8 November 1860 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland and died on 24 September 1900 in York, Ontario, Canada 5.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland. The Reverend Nimmo Smith, minister at Haddington, conducted the ceremony. The witnesses were William Nisbet and Sarah Cairns.

Hugh Cairns was a ploughman by occupation. he was a single man of 22 years of age, and lived at Cairnie, Inveresk.

Eleanor Haimes was also single and aged 20 years. She worked as a domestic servant and lived at Bernard Terrace, Edinburgh. Her mother was deceased.

The marriage was registered at Haddington on 7 June 1880, Thomas Kemp being the registrar. 1

Hugh next married Margaret CANNAWIN, daughter of David CANNAWIN and Mary ERSKINE, on 31 December 1901 in York, Ontario, Canada.3 (Margaret CANNAWIN was born about 1859 in Peel county, Ontario, Canada.)
