DE LESLIE, Margaret 1
- Born: About 1295
- Marriage (1): INNES, John 7th of that Ilk, Sir 1
User ID: W293.
Margaret married Sir John INNES 7th of that Ilk, son of Sir William DE INNES 'Baro de Innes', 6th Laird and Unknown.1 (Sir John INNES 7th of that Ilk was born about 1294.)
Marriage Notes:
"In Douglas's Peerage it is stated that Sir Norman had also two daughters - I. Margaret, married to Sir John Innes of Innes ; II. Ann, married to Sir Alexander Dunbar of Westfield.
This statement appears to be correct, although the Laurus Leslaeana describes these ladies as daughters of Sir Norman's son Andrew."
from Family of Leslie
Note:
This daughter and her marriage are doubtful according to some sources. For example in The Scots Peerage, vol. 7:
"He (Norman) had issue, so far as recorded, one son, Sir Andrew, who succeeded. According to the family historians, Sir Norman had two daughters, Margaret, married to Sir John Innes of Innes, and Ann, married to Sir Alexander Dunbar of Westfleld, but dates will not admit of this."
The objection to Ann is dealt with in the respective file.
As for Margaret, he Leslie family historians name Margaret's husband as John. John is an Innes family name, but at this time none is generally named as John. The Innes lairds' names are a matter on some uncertainty. Secondary sources name this laird variously as Robert or William. The period 1270-1367 seems hazy, from an absence of written documents. Yet, it may simply be an error in the forename of the husband in question, not a complete absence of daughters. 1 2
