"Asloun Castle is the fragmentary ruin of a 16th-century Z-plan tower house situated about 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of Alford in Aberdeenshire, Scotland [....]

The castle was likely constructed before 1563 for a branch of the Calder family, as evidenced by a charter signed by John Cowdell (or Calder) de Asslowne in that year. Ownership records trace back to at least 1496 with Robert Calder of Asloun, followed by John Calder, who married Elizabeth Forbes of Towie around 1549 and exchanged lands with the Forbes in 1562. The Calders held the estate until 1625, when James Calder assigned its reversion to John Forbes of Balnagask, marking the transition to Forbes family control; subsequent lairds included John Forbes in 1641 and Robert Forbes in 1653."

Note:

The John Forbes who was laird of Asloun in 1641, followed by Robert Forbes, was of the Balfluig branch of the Corsindae line of the Forbes family; he was not the same person as John Forbes of Balnagask who was of the Monymusk branch, though they were 2nd cousins once removed.

Their common ancestors were William of Corsindae and Margaret Lumsden. The Moneymusk Forbes descended from the couple's second son, Duncan, whereas the Balfluigs descended from the couple's fourth son, John.

John married Marjory FERGUSON in 1614.¹ (Marjory FERGUSON was born about 1598.)

"John (Forbes), sometime of Lethenty, and afterwards of Balnagask, married, in 1714 (see Note below), Marjory, daughter of James Ferguson, Burgess of Aberdeen, and had three sons and four daughters : Captain Patrick, o.s.p.; John and Duncan; Agnes, married Alexander Forbes of Easter Migvie; Marjory, married Mr. Adam Barclay, minister of Towie; Barbara and Jean."
