Janet married John CUMMYN 7th (8th per Nisbet) of Culter, son of Sir Alexander CUMINE 6th (7th per Nisbet) of Culter and Elizabeth BLINSHALL.¹ (John CUMMYN 7th (8th per Nisbet) of Culter was born about 1502.)

Note:

Nisbet, in the excerpt above, does not offer a date or year when John Cumin married Janet irvine, nor are her parents' details mentioned. Other sources are misleading on this. They quote Nisbet as source, then add a date, 1480, the net effect being that the Janet Irvine who married David Barclay can be equated to the Janet irvine who married John Cumin of Culter.

eg On page 58 of The Irvines of Drum and Collateral Branches we read, in reference to the children of Alexander Irvine 5th laird of Drum and his wife of the Lindsay family, that an unnamed daughter

"(8) married to Cummyn of Culter (?) or Barclay of Mathers (?) or both.²"

which the footnote clarifies:

"² John Cummyn of Culter married Janet Irvine, daughter to the laird of Drum, in 1480. - (Nisbet's ' Heraldry.') David Barclay of Mathers died before his father (who survived until 1497), and left, by Janet his wife, daughter of Irvine of Drum, a son, Alexander Barclay, who succeeded his grandfather. (Playfair's 'Baronetage.') David Barclay of Mathers married Janet Irvine, daughter of Irvine of Drum. This is shown by charters of the lands of Falside, etc., in the Mearns. - (Nisbet's ' Heraldry.')"

This information is repeated in A History of the Barclay Family, (page 171):

"Of Alexander's son David there are no records beyond the fact of his marriage with Jonet Irvine of Drum, and that they had one son, Alexander (Mathers VII), who succeeded his grandfather (Mathers VI). Jonet was a daughter of Alexander, sixth Laird of Drum, by his second wife. After David's death she married, in 1480, John Cummyn of Culter. (source: Leslie's Irvine of Drum, p. 56.)"

[In fact, Janet Irvine, wife of David, was the daughter of the 5th laird of Drum, not the 6th.]

There was a laird of Culter, not John but Alexander Cumyn, who did marry in 1480-1481, according to The Family of Burnett of Leys, (page 14). He married Christian Burnett, not Janet Irvine. According to Nisbet's family line of Cumin of Culter, these two would have been grandparents of John Cumin, 8th of Culter.

Nisbet does state that John Cumin married Janet Irvine. She cannot, however, have been the same Janet irvine as the woman who married David Barclay, according to the order of Cumin of Culter lairds as presented by Nisbet in the Appendix to A System of Heraldry. ^{1 2 3}
