SURNAME

Elizabeth Grant's maiden surname is transcribed from her husband's testament and printed usually as Lime. This is clear in typescript, but the handwritten form is arguably Sime. It is the handwritten form in the testament which has been mistranscribed, the transcribers believing it to be an 'L'. A consultation of the handwriting in question shows marked differences between the first letter of her surname and other words beginning with 'L'', like 'Law' and 'Leslie'. There are similarities with, on the other hand, 'Summa' and 'Sterling'. It is not difficult to see why this has been mistranscribed; it is very easy when reading handwriting of this period to fall into the trap of reading it as if it were modern writing whereas we should consult the way the writer forms other letters of the same type in the same document.

Elizabeth married John GRANT younger, of Gellovie, Commissioner of Supply for Elgin and Forres, son of John GRANT of Gellovie, then of Gartinbeg and Unknown. (John GRANT younger, of Gellovie, Commissioner of Supply for Elgin and Forres was born about 1726 and died on 28 June 1780 in Easter Elchies, Moray, Scotland.)

  Marriage Notes:

John Grant died at Easter Elchies on 28th June 1780. He left issue"
