In 1891 the census found Alexander Haimes, head of the household, aged 53 years and born in Haddington, living at 39 Niddry Street, Edinburgh, with his wife Mary, his two children, George and Ellen, and his two nieces, Mary and Rebecca. Mary Haimes was recorded as 52 years of age. By occupation she was a coach lace maker, and she was Edinburgh born.

The 1901 census for Leith recorded Ellen Adams, a wife with a daughter, though her husband is not named in the entry, living at 13 Henderson Street with her mother Mary Haims and a cousin "Jane" Nisbet. Ellen was a dressmaker who worked on her own account at home. She was 29 years old and had been born in Edinburgh. Her daughter Mary was 3 years old and had been born in Leith. Mary Haims was 62 years old and born in Edinburgh. Both Mary and Ellen were recorded as married. "Jane" Nisbet, as the entry has it, was probably Ina Nisbet -Isabella Sandilands Nisbet- daughter of Isabella Haimes and Alexander Nisbet. Ina married from this address in 1902.

Mary married Alexander HAIMES Shoemaker, son of George HAIMES Hairdresser, DNA Linked and Helen TAIT (DNA Linked), on 31 December 1863 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Scotland.¹ (Alexander HAIMES Shoemaker was born about 1836 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland ⁶ and died 17 April 1906 at 5.30 am in Poorhouse, Craiglockhart, Colinton Parish, Midlothian, Scotland ².). The cause of his death was senile decay and cardiac failure.
