PARENTAGE

The Thanage of Fermartyn lists, on page 23, Thomas Meldrum "who gets the lands of Eden." as the son of Sir William Meldrum of Fyvie, younger relative of Alexander Meldrum refrred to as 'dominus de Fyvie'.

This presents a chronological difficulty. If Thomas Meldrum was the grandfather of Patrick Leslie, and Patrick's father was William, Leslie, 4th of Balquhain who died in 1467, then the dates simply do not allow this.

Whereas Family of Leslie states that:

"Sir William (Leslie) had also a natural son, Patrick, by Marjory, or Mary, daughter of Sir Thomas Meldrum of Fyvie. From this Patrick are descended the Leslies of Iden, the Leslies of Baccarn, and the Leslies of Crichie."

In the latter secondary source, Thomas is called 'Thomas of Meldrum of Fyvie', which is a more feasible designation, chronologically speaking, if he was the brother of William Meldrum who married the Preston heiress of the Fyvie portion of Fermartyn. 1 2

Thomas married.
