Mary Hardie was recorded as 7 years of age by the 1881 census for St Giles Edinburgh, where she lived with his parents at 7 Hay Street.

In 1891 Mary Hardie was recorded living with her family in Newington registration district, in the civil parish of Edinburgh St Cuthbert's. She was the second eldest of the six children living with her father at 23 Lutton Place. Mary Hardie was recorded as 18 years old, born in St Giles parish, Edinburgh, and by occupation a pianist.
