When Alexander Gordon was born in 1881 it was his father, George, a police constable, who had been present where the birth took place, who registered his son's birth. He gave notice before the registrar, William Cochrane, at Liberton on 31 December 1881.
In 1891, Alex was recorded by the census, living at Linlithgow, with his family, at 32 Low Port. He was aged 8 years and a scholar. He had been born in Gilmerton.
In 1901 a young man named Alexander Gordon was recorded by the census of that year living at 1 Orwell Terrace, Edinburgh, where the head of the household was Agnes Oliver a 63 year old woman who had two grown up daughters. Alexander was recorded as 19 years old and had been born in Gilmerton, Edinburghshire (Midlothian). He worked as a Grocer's shopkeeper.
Alexander was a witness in 1906 at James Gordon's wedding.
In 1907 Alexander Gordon, a grocer aged 26 years, sailed for Quebec aboard the SS Cassandra from Glasgow.
The 1921 census for Canada recorded a single man named Alex Gordon, born in Scotland, and whose parents were both Scots-born, aged 40 years. He had come to Canada in 1907. He was a lodger at 1368 George Street in Vancouver, in the home of Thomas Rigby, also single, and also aged 40 years, born in England. Rigby had arrived in Canada in 1896. He worked as a club steward and had an income of $800.
