TEMPLE PARISH MIDLOTHIAN
Known in Scottish Gaelic as Baile nan Trodach, Temple is situated south of Edinburgh. It is both a parish and a village name. The village lies on the east bank of the South Esk. The first grandmaster of the Knights Templar, Hugh de Payens, met with King David 1 in 1128 and was granted the lands of Balantrodach, which became the first seat of the Order after it was formally recognised by the Council of Troyes in the same year. Just before the year of Bannockburn the Pope consented to the abolition of the Order and its property was seized by the secular authorities. The area around the village has been associated by legend with the mysterious Templar treasure said to be hidden locally. The present parish was founded after the Reformation in the 16th century the fertile land of Temple allowed a busy agricultural life to develop.
James married Ann CRAIGE, daughter of John CRAIG and Unknown, on 19 June 1711 in Temple parish, Midlothian, Scotland.1 2 (Ann CRAIGE was born about 1685.)
