DURIE, Janet 1

  • Born: About 1547
  • Marriage (1): WARDLAW, Andrew 24 March 1561(1562) (contract) 1

   User ID: Q292

Janet married Andrew WARDLAW, son of Henry WARDLAW 6th of Torry and Katherine LUNDY, 24 March 1561(1562) (contract).1 (Andrew WARDLAW was born about 1546 and died after 1613.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Andrew Wardlaw of Torrie was most probably born about 1539-40 (see Note below), as in 1561-2 he was still presumably a minor, as his curators are named in his marriage contract, which was dated 24 March 1561-2. He was first contracted, like his father, to a daughter of the Earl of Rothes. She is designed in the contract, dated 22 June 1560, Beatrix, sister-german to Andrew, Earl of Rothes, but the marriage does not seem to have taken place. The lady was subsequently married to David Beaton of Creich. On 24 March 1561-2 Andrew Wardlaw was contracted and afterwards married to Janet Durie, daughter of Henry Kemp or Durie, by his wife Janet Durie of that ilk. Janet Durie's father Henry Kemp of Thomaston was a servant and favourite of King James V. It is said that James V. forced the heiress of Durie to marry him. Janet Durie of that ilk was the only child of Robert Durie of that ilk and Katherine Lundy. Henry Kemp took his wife's name and was known as Henry Durie."

Note:

The marriage contract of Andrew's parents is said to have been dated the 9th of January 1546, so a birth date of 1439-40 seems too early.
