Gavin Cumming is not generally reputed to have been the factor for the Earl of Erroll; his father and elder brother, Alexander, held that position. Gavin may have assisted them and Jean may have been Gavin's daughter. Or, as the chronology suggests there may have been a simple error in naming the 'factor for the Earl of Erroll'., in which case James or Alexander might have been her father.
If Jean was the daughter of Gavin then, if a legitimate child, she would have been born in the 1660s. If born before or outside of marriage, her birth year could be earlier.Since we do not know exact dates of birth or marriage of the parties involved, the matter is uncertain. 1
