Sarah married Sir James JOHNSTONE of that Ilk, son of Sir John JOHNSTONE of that Ilk, Marquess of Annandale and Margaret SCOTT, 25 December 1587(contract).1 (Sir James JOHNSTONE of that Ilk was born about 1567 and died on 6 April 1608 1.). The cause of his death was wounded by gunshot. Marriage Notes: "He (James Johnstone) married, contract dated at Terregles, 25 December 1587, Sara Maxwell, daughter of John Maxwell, Lord Herries. She survived her husband, and married, successively, John Fleming, Earl of Wigton, issue two daughters (see that title), and Hugh Montgomery, Viscount of Airds in Ireland, without issue. She married Montgomery not long after 20 April 1625, when he proposed to her. She died on 29 March 1636, and was buried with much ceremonial in the Abbey Church of Holyroodhouse. Sir James Johnstone and Sara Maxwell had issue one son and two daughters." Sarah next married John FLEMING 1st Earl of Wigtown, 6th Lord Fleming,, son of John FLEMING 5th Lord Fleming and Elizabeth ROSS, after 6 April 1608.1 (John FLEMING 1st Earl of Wigtown, 6th Lord Fleming, was born about 1567 and died in April 1619 1.) Marriage Notes: "He (John Fleming) married .... secondly, Sarah Maxwell, eldest daughter of John, Lord Herries, and relict of Sir James Johnston of Johnston, who had died 6 April 1608. She had a charter of the lands of Thornyquhat in Dumfriesshire 12 December 1620" Sarah next married Hugh MONTGOMERY Viscount Montgomery of the Great Ards after April 1619.1 (Hugh MONTGOMERY Viscount Montgomery of the Great Ards was born about 1560.) Marriage Notes: "She (Sarah Maxwell) survived him (John Fleming), and married, thirdly, Hugh Montgomery, first Viscount Montgomery of the Great Ards in Ireland, and was buried in Holyrood Abbey 29 March 1636." |
