  • Marriage (1): SINCLAIR, James Master of Sinclair 1
  • Died: After 22 May 1595 1

   User ID: H520.

Isabella married James SINCLAIR Master of Sinclair, son of Henry SINCLAIR 6th Lord Sinclair and Janet LINDSAY.1 (James SINCLAIR Master of Sinclair was born about 1557 and died 9 May 1593(dvp) 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"James (Sinclair), Master of Sinclair, had charters as son and apparent heir of his father, of the baronies of Ravenscraig, Dysart, Newburgh, and others on 24 July 1577, and of the barony of Dysart 5 July 1592. He was present at the Privy Council 26 February 1592-93, and died vita patris 9 May 1593, aged thirty-six. He married Isabella Leslie, daughter of Andrew, fourth Earl of Rothes. She had a charter of one-sixth of the lands of Wester Lochore and others 22 May 1595. He had issue"

from Scots Peerage (vol 7)

Note:

1

Andrew was the 5th Earl of Rothes, not the 4th Earl.

2

Historical Records of the Family of Leslie states that 'Isabella' was a daughter of Andrew's third wife, Janet Durie, but the chronology appears to contradict this.

Since
Memorials of the Family of Wemyss of Wemyss states that Lady Elizabeth Leslie who married, in 1608, David, apparent of Wemyss, was the daughter of Janet Durie (so, not Grizel Hamilton as given by Colonel Leslie), and that the chronology does fit that Wemyss statement, it is likely that Colonel Leslie, author of Historical Records of the Family of Leslie has simply mixed up the two daughters in question.

It may be that both names were rendered as Isabella in documentary Latin.
