Ludovick married Sophia RUTHVEN, daughter of William RUTHVEN 4th Lord Ruthven, Earl of Gowrie and Dorothea STEWART, on 20 April 1591.1 (Sophia RUTHVEN was born about 1573 and died before 1592 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Sophia (Ruthven), married to Ludovick, Duke of Lennox, and died before 1592."

from Scots Peerage (vol 4)

"He (Ludovick Stewart) married, first, 20 April 1591, Sophia Ruthven, third daughter of William, first Earl of Gowrie, who died, before 1592, without issue"

from Scots Peerage (vol 5) 1 2

Ludovick next married Jean CAMPBELL, daughter of Sir Matthew CAMPBELL of Loudoun and Isobel DRUMMOND, in August 1598.1 (Jean CAMPBELL was born about 1573 and died before 1612 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (Ludovick Stewart) married .... secondly, in August 1598, Jean, eldest (see Note below) daughter of Sir Matthew Campbell of Loudoun, and sister of Hew, Lord of Loudoun, relict of Robert Montgomerie of Giffen, styled Master of Eglinton, with whom he lived unhappily, and who died before 1612."

from Scots Peerage (vol 5)

Note:

There is disagreement, confusion even, among secondary sources about the relative ages and birth positions of the daughters of Sir Matthew Campbell, Jean being named as the eldest daughter, for example.

We read that Ludovick Stewart had a son and a daughter by his second wife, Jean Campbell. Both children died young, but we are told, additionally, that the daughter was given up to her father's care in 1607.

Now Margaret, Jean's sister, married to Thomas, 6th Lord Boyd, "
occurs as his wife in 1568". If the latter statement is true, Jean can hardly have been older than Margaret and still have produced a daughter born between 1598 and 1607.

This call into question the statement that Jean was the first daughter of the family. It is feasible there was an early daughter jean, who died, and a later daughter was named for her.

Ludovick next married Frances HOWARD in 1621.1 (Frances HOWARD was born about 1676,1 died on 8 October 1639 1 and was buried in 1639 in Westminster Abbey, London, England 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (Ludovick Stewart) married .... thirdly, in 1621, Frances Howard, daughter of Thomas, Viscount Howard of Bindon, and widow successively of Henry Prannell of London and of Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford. She died 8 October 1639, aged sixty-three, and was buried in Westminster Abbey."

from Scots Peerage (vol 5) 1
