from Scots Peerage (vol 8)
"James Cleland - 7th Cleland of that ilk. Was probably born about 1420. Married, in 1450, Jean (Janet), youngest daughter of William, 2nd Lord Somerville, by his wife Jean Mowat of Stenhouse.
Three years thereafter (i.e., in 1450) he (the 2nd Lord Somerville) marryes his youngest daughter Janet upon James Cleilland, sone and heir to William Cleilland of that ilk. The portione is ane thousand and fyve hundred merkes, payable at three termes, and twentieth milk kyne with their followers.' (Somerville's 'Memorie of the Somervilles.')
Nisbet confuses James, the 7th Cleland, with William, the 6th, for he says : - 'From him [i.e., from James, 2nd Cleland of Cleland) was descended William Cleland of that ilk who in the reign of King James III. married Jean, daughter of William Lord Somerville (as in the manuscript of that family). From them branched Cleland of Faskine, Cleland of Monkland and Cleland of Gartness.' "
