"The Maxwells claim as their founder Maccus, a witness as 'fllius Undweyn' to the Inquisitio Davidis about 1116, and later as 'fllius Undwain ' to a grant of King David I. to Melrose Abbey in Roxburghshire. He probably gave his
name to the lands of Maccuswell (Maxwell) and Maccustoun (Maxton) in the same shire."
