"John Menteith, 1st of Kerse and Alva, was a younger son of Sir Walter Menteith of Rusky and was appointed Sheriff of the Sheriffdom of Clackmannan in 1352. He m. Mariota, daughter and heiress of Sir John Stirling of Kerse, by right of whom he succeeded to the lands of Kerse and Alva and for which they had a charter on 25th January 1357"
