Alexander married Mariota MACDONALD, daughter of Donald MACDONALD Lord of the Isles, 'Earl of Ross' and Mary LESLIE 'Countess, 9th of Ross'.1 (Mariota MACDONALD was born about 1402.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (Archibald/Celestin Campbell) probably did marry Mariota of the Isles, daughter of Sir Donald, Lord of the Isles and Ross, as, on 13 February 1419-20, the Pope granted a dispensation for their union, as though they were betrothed they could not marry without his permission (Cal. Papal Letters, vii. 151). She is probably the Mariota of the Isles, who about 1439 married Alexander Sutherland of Dunbeath (The Thanes of Cawdor, 16)."

from Scots Peerage (vol 9 Addenda et Corrigenda)

"However, more recent research by Andrew MacEwen has determined that the 6th earl did indeed have a son Alexander, who was referred to as "the master of Sutherland" and who received, on the occasion of his marriage to Mariota MacDonald, a grant of the lands of Dunbeath in Caithness.[18] MacEwen argues that the term 'master' was used to identify an heir presumptive, and therefore at any given time could be a lord's son, brother, uncle, cousin, etc. (not only an elder son, as Sir Robert Gordon assumed), and presents a detailed case for Alexander being the next youngest brother of John, 7th earl of Sutherland who was, at some point, his brother's heir-presumptive and thus titled 'master of Sutherland'.[19] There is at least one existing charter, granted at Inverness, 10 October 1444, by Alexander Ross, earl of Ross and Lord of the Isles, which was witnessed by 'Alexandro de Suthirland magistro ejsdem.'[20] This Alexander Ross was the brother of Sutherland's wife Mariota, who had earlier granted to them jointly "omnes et singulas terras nostras Dominii de Dunbeth."[21]"

Alexander had a relationship with Katherine CHALMERS. (Katherine CHALMERS was born about 1410.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Alexander (Sutherland) also had a long-standing relationship with Katherine Chalmers, with whom he had a number of illegitimate children.[5] The following natural children were specifically mentioned in his will:
