  Research Notes:

1696 POLL

There is an entry for a John Elphinstone in the 1696 Poll Book for Aberdeenshire, in the Presbytery of Ellon in the parish of Foveran, who may be this man. He is resident in Savoch and described as 'tennent and gentleman ther'. He is also referred to in the entry as 'an heritor in the parish of Daviot', the parish where the elder John Elphinstone of Glack, probably this man's father, was recorded. With him live his wife and daughter, six servants, and a number of other employees.

The link to Foveran is significant in so far as this John Elphinstone married a sister of the Baronet of Foveran, Samuel Frbes. 3

John married Margaret FORBES, daughter of Mr Alexander FORBES of Ardo, then of Foveran and Margaret HUNTER, by 1691.1 (Margaret FORBES was baptised on 8 August 1658 in Saint Nicholas parish, Aberdeen, Scotland 4.)

  Marriage Notes:

" ... He (John Elphinstone) was married to Margaret Forbes in 1691 ... "

from Inverurie and the Earldom

Note:

Davidson states this in relation to John's father in a sentence which simply does not make sense viz:

"The Poll Book (1696) records John Elphinstone of Glack, and his wife, Anna Irvine, with Mr. William and Patrick, his children. He was married to Margaret Forbes in 1691, but his sons must have been of an earlier marriage."

He appears to be confusing John Elphinstone, father with son, and condensing the two into one. 1
