As well as himself and his wife Eleanor, there were seven others living in the household: sons and daughter of the couple plus 1 boarder, Robert Saunders, aged 24 years born in Govan, and a labourer in the oil works. John Steven himself was recorded as 47 years of age and had been born in Forfar. He was a retortman in the oil works.

In the death certificate of his wife in 1927 John Steven was recorded as a general labourer.

The cause of her death was carcinoma of the uterus.
