"Henry Elphinstone, of Pittendreich, who disputed the possession of Elphinstone with his niece Agnes. The question was decided by arbiters, in 1471, when the estate of Elphinstone was assigned to Agnes Elphinstone, while Airthbeg, Pittendreich, and Strickshall were assigned to Henry Elphinstone. In December 1477 he resigned Airthbeg to his grandson John. He is said to have married Jean Cunninghame, daughter of the laird of Polniaise. He had issue."

"Henry Elphinstone the second son, succeeded his elder brother in 1435. After the decision granting the Elphinstone lands in East Lothian to his niece, the lands of Pittendreich became the principal estate of the family. He is said to have married Jean Cuninghame, daughter of the Laird of Polmaise, and had by her three sons :

1. James.

2. Lawrence, of whom descended the Elphinstones of Selmys. See also p. 535 infra.

3. John, bailie of Glasgow."
