  General Notes:

"William Lauder, Bishop of Glasgow, a younger (see Note below) son of Sir Alan Lauder of Hatton, was first archdeacon of Lothian. In the year 1405, he has a safe-conduct from King Hen. VI. 'Magistro Gulielmo Lauder archidiacono Laudoniae, veniendo in regnum Angliae penes praesentiam regis pro quibusdam expediendis ;' and another on 5th July, 1406. The see of Glasgow becoming vacant in 1408, Lauder was preferred by Pope Benedict XIII., who, at Avignon, then contested the papal supremacy with Gregory XII. at Rome, and consequently did not hold his appointment by the election of the chapter. In 1423, Murdoch, Duke of Albany, Regent of Scotland, made him Lord Chancellor in succession to the Bishop of Aberdeen, and on the 9th August of that year, he was nominated first commissioner for treating about the redemption of King James I."

Note:

According to a Latin charter in the Registrum Glasguense[26National Records of Scotland] dated 1st August 1414, William was the eldest son, not a younger one.

"William Lawedre (Lawdere, Lauder). Archdeacon of Lothian [2 He was son and heir of Robert de Lawedre and Anabella, his consort.] For. Doctor utriusque Juris (E.). His appointment by the Pope (anti-pope) Benedict XIIL was on 9 July, 1408 (E.). He probably went in person to the Apostolic See, and probably received consecration there. At all events we find that the king of England grants William Lawedre, bishop of Glasgow, a safeconduct to return from France to Scotland through England, on 24 Oct. 1408 Rot. Scot. ii. 189).[....] Lawedre was chancellor 8 Jan. 1421-2 (R.M.S. ii. 169), and so continued apparently till his death. William Lawedre was uterine brother of Alexander Lawedre, appointed bishop of Dunkeld in 1440, who died before his consecration (Sc. xvi. 26) : see under Dunkeld. He was frequently employed in affairs of state (see B.C. iv.)."
