"Alexander Gordon was the nominee of the progressive party in the Council, but the Crown at that period, either by forbidding an election or by direct command, managed to keep its favourites in the chair. On James II's flight, the Michaelmas election of 1688, which had been postponed, was immediately held, when Gordon was chosen Provost, an office which he held for two years, his son John being elected one of the Magistrates at the same time. He was Commissioner for the burgh to the Scottish Parliament from 1689 till his death."

"The commission to provost [Alexander] Gordon for Aberdeen sustained and the other in favour of Walter Robertson rejected The meeting of the estates, having heard and considered the report of the committee for controverted elections, bearing that they having heard and considered the objections made by either party anent the debatable election of the burgh of Aberdeen, it is the opinion of the committee that the election in favour of provost Gordon is regular, and that he was elected by the plurality of resident burgesses and therefore he ought to be preferred to bailie Walter Robertson, the estates have approved and approve the said report and interpose their authority thereto."
