"Abernethy, John, of Mayen

Eldest son of Alexander Abernethy, 1st of Mayen, and his wife Isobel Hacket, whose family had previously owned the estate. John married Jean, daughter of James Moir, 2nd of Stoneywood by his first wife, Mary Scroggie, and had two daughter, Jean and Elizabeth, and a son, James, 3rd of Mayen, who married Jane Duff of Hatton, and having shot John Leith of Leithhall in Aberdeen in 1763, was outlawed and fled to France where he was visited by Lord Fife in 1766."
