  General Notes:

"Gilbert, Earl of Orkney and Caithness, was probably the Earl of Caithness named in 1244 as one of the nobles who pledged themselves to the Pope on behalf of the treaty with England. He died 1256. Bishop Tulloch, in his statement, refers to two Earl Gilberts, but The Annals only notice one, Gilbride, whom they call Gibbon, Earl of Orkney.' This is the more probable version, and this Earl Gilbert is further vouched for by a charter in the Dupplin Charter-Chest."
