General Notes:
The territory of Washington was created out of the Territory of Oregon by U.S. President Millard Fillmore on March 2 1853. News of the creation of this new territory only reached its inhabitants on April 25 1853.
The boundaries were: north, 49 degree North Latitude; south, approximately due east from the mouth of the Columbia River; east, the Rocky Mountains; west, the Pacific Ocean. Later the eastern part of the territory became the States of Idaho and Montana.
27 male citizens moved for a separate territory at a convention in August 29 1851 at the Cowlitz Landing. The primary reason for establishing the new territory was the unreasonable distance to Oregon City, capital of the Oregon Territory, causing inconvenience, additional costs, and even injustice to inhabitants north of the Columbia River.
