St Ninian's Parish Paisley
Baptisms

"Baptismal Register 1836
Michael, lawful son of John Quigly and Cath. Lynns, born June 25 was baptized by me July 31 1836. Sponsors James Doran and Helen Lynns
(signed) Peter Forbes"

"Michael Twigley" was the youngest of his family recorded by the 1841 census for Barony parish in Glasgow. He was living with his mother, brothers, and sister Annabella at 114 Main Street Anderston. He had been born outside of Lanarkshire, the county the census recorded him in, and his age was 4 years.

"Michael Sweedley" was recorded in the 1851 census for the parish of Riccarton in Ayrshire. He was 14 years old, and lived with his widower mother "Mrs Sweedley", his brother Thomas, and, temporarily at least, his married sister Isabella and three of her children. Michael's birthplace was noted as Paisley.

The 1861 census for Old Rome, in Dundonald parish Ayrshire, recorded Michael living with his mother. He was noted as being a coal miner, aged 23 years and unmarried. His birthplace was recorded as Houston, Renfrewshire.

In 1866 a son, James Tweedley, was born in Motherwell to a couple married on the same date as Michael and Ann Quigly, and in the same town, but the couple were called Matthew Tweedley and Ann Wood. 'Matthew' was a coal miner. He made his X mark to inform the registrar, so presumably he could not read either. It was probably this Michael, whose name the registrar mistook for Matthew. Tweedley was interchangeable in some families with Quigley.

Michael was the informant of his son Michael's birth in 1877, when he made his X mark. He described his occupation then as a coal miner. [His occupation was noted similarly in 1880 when he informed the registrar at Galston of the birth of his new son, William.]

In the 1871 census Michael was recorded living with his wife Ann, and four of his children in Iron Work Square, Galston, Ayrshire. He was aged 34 years and a coalminer. Their home had one windowed room. Thomas Murray aged 21 years, a coal miner born in Loudon parish, lodged with them. He may have been a cousin.

Michael's daughter Agnes was married in 1888 and Michael was recorded in the marriage lines as a 'coal miner'.

Michael and Annie Quigley lived at 11 Chapel Lane, Galston in 1891 in a house with two windowed rooms. Living with them were their children John aged 26 years, Elizabeth 18 years, Michael 14 years, William 11 years, and two grandchildren, probably John's children, Michael 3 years, and Catherine 1 year. Michael, now a grandfather, was still employed at 53 years of age as a coal miner. Whether it was the fault of Michael or of the registrar, the date of the marriage of the new baby's parents was recorded mistakenly as 1865, when it was in fact 1864.

Michael was noted as 'coal miner' in his son John's marriage certificate of 1887.

Michael died in 1895 aged 57 years. His death certificate recorded his occupation as 'coal miner'.

Michael's daughter married in 1926. Her father was recorded as 'coal miner deceased' in her marriage certificate.

Similarly, the death certificate of Michael's son, Michael in 1935, and his son William in 1951, recorded him as a coal miner.

Michael's daughter Catherine died in 1954. Her death certificate recorded her father Michael as 'coalminer-hewer deceased'. 6 7 8 9 10

MURRAY

A Daniel Murray married a Jane Lynas in 1850 (of Stranraer, date of birth 1829), but Murray is a common name.

  Medical Notes:

Dr H. Scott Russell certified the cause of death.

Michael's son John was present where his father's death occurred, and signed the notification of the death on 31 January 1895 before James C. Hutchison, the registrar, at Galston.

Michael married Ann WOOD, daughter of James WOOD and Agnes PERCY, on 3 June 1864 in St Joseph's RC Chapel, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Ann WOOD was born on 4 September 1836 in Newmilns, Ayrshire, Scotland 2 3 11, baptised on 5 October 1836 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland and died 30 May 1914 at 3.00 am in 8 Chapel Lane, Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland 12.). The cause of her death was 'phtisis pulmonalis' over 2 months and 'haemophysis'.

  Marriage Notes:

The couple were married according to the rites of the Roman Catholic Church. They were married by Fr John McLachlan RCC who also witnessed the marks of bride and groom. The other witnesses to this were Edward McDonald, John McGary and Catherine McLaughlin. The certificate was issued by J. Gregory, registrar.

The groom, Michael Quigley, made his X mark. He was an unmarried man of 26 years of age, a coal miner, residing at Church Lane in Galston. His father John, was already dead.

The bride was Ann Woods. She was a 27 year old unmarried woman of Loudon parish. She too made her X mark. Both her parents were deceased. Ann's father was named as 'Andrew' Woods, a weaver. 1
