John (Gordon, son of William Gordon 6th of Birkenburn) 'was born the nynth of Jun., being Fryday, 1721 betuixt 7 and 8 ocloack forenoon, the last quarter of the moon, John Duff, Drumurs son, and John Gordon of Achynache godfathers; Mrs. Chalmers and her daughter Mrs. Maij (?) etc. witnesses. Mr. Chalmers baptized him'."

John married Eupham BETON.1 (Eupham BETON was born about 1615 and died after 23 July 1655 1.)
Marriage Notes:
"John Gordon died before January 11, 1688. He married Eupham Beaton (Familie of Innes, p. 244). 'Bessie Douglas, relict of umquhill Johne Innes of Leuchars, made her testament in the volt chamber of Leuchars, 23 July, 1655. She left little gear ... a stand of silk courtains with velvet pands and silk fringes, in the hands of Eupham Betoun sometime Lady Achynachie, impignorat to her for £80 '... (ibid., pp. 243-4). Elizabeth Betoune (Lady Achynachie) directs her letters to her sister - 'the right honourable my loving sister the Goodwyff of Cotts . . .' (ibid., p. 209). 'Elizabeth' seems a misreading by Cosmo Innes for 'Eupham' (as found in the will), which seemed a favourite with the ladies at Auchindachy. Who Eupham Beaton was, is not clear."

In the copy of the text of Innes genealogy that has been consulted by this researcher [Ane Account of the Familie of Innes compiled by Duncan Forbes of Culloden 1698 (1864)] there appears in the Index of Persons:
"Betoune, Elizabeth (Lady Achynachie),
209, 244."
The first reference appears in the narrative about Alexander Innes of Cotts, 'Craig in peril', who married Marjory Gordon of the Gight family. It concerns correspondence by letter and cites examples of the terms used in that family. In the context the reference to the Goodwyff of Cotts appears to mean Marjory Gordon, who, although she lived a generation before Eupham Beaton, may well have been alive for most of Eupham's lifetime.
Marjory Gordon's grandmother was Agnes Beton, daughter of Cardinal David Beton, so the use of the word 'sister' may not be a literal one but more in the sense of a cousin, or from the same family origin. Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots, did refer to each other on occasion as 'sister' in their correspondence.
So Eupham may be allying herself with Beton connections, or, alternatively, with Ogilvy or Gordon connections through her marriage. 1 4
