User ID: Y720. General Notes: "William Sinclair, Earl of Orkney and Caithness, was apparently the first to be styled Lord Sinclair." William married Elizabeth DOUGLAS, daughter of Archibald DOUGLAS 4th Earl of Douglas, Duke of Touraine and Margaret STEWART.1 (Elizabeth DOUGLAS was born about 1400 and died about 1451.) Marriage Notes: "WILLIAM SINCLAIR of Newburgh, commonly known as 'The Waster,' was the eldest son of the said William, Earl of Caithness, by his first marriage with Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of Archibald, fourth Earl of Douglas. He was disinherited by his father, who, on 7 December 1476, resigned his lands of the earldom of Caithness in the hands of the King, from whom he obtained a new grant with remainder to William, the eldest son of his second marriage." William next married Marjory SUTHERLAND, daughter of Alexander SUTHERLAND of Dunbeath and Unknown, before 15 November 1546.2 (Marjory SUTHERLAND was born about 1431.) Marriage Notes: "William, Earl of Caithness, married, secondly, before 15 November 1456, Marjory Sutherland, daughter of Alexander Sutherland of Dunbeath, sometimes, but wrongly, called Master of Sutherland.
