"JAMES DOUGLAS, the second, but eldest surviving, son, succeeded his father some time between February 1439-40 and May 1441. He appears, however, to have been considered mentally deficient, or perhaps a spendthrift, as on 22 May 1441 the Government of King James II., then a minor, declared him to be incapable of managing his own affairs, and appointed James Giffard of Sheriffhall (his brother-in-law) to be his curator, to act as governor and administrator of all his lordships, castles, manors, and of all his goods, and the receiver of his rents, for the space of nineteen years, constituting Giffard also constable of the castles of Dalkeith, Aberdour, and others, with full powers of jurisdiction over the lands.Failing James Giffard from any cause, it was provided that his brothers John and William successively should take office as curator till the nineteen years should expire."
