The 1881 census for Barony parish, Glasgow, recorded Thomas Tweedlie living with his family at 763 Duke Street. His age was recorded then as 14 years and his birthplace as Glasgow. He worked as a porter.

According to his mother's 1886 parish relief application, Thomas was then aged 19 years, and had been born in Orr Street. He was a soldier and was still single. ^{1 2}
