  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Clarkston in New Monkland parish, Lanarkshire, recorded a family of Rice (variation of Rocks) lodging with a family of McElroys at 5 Clark Land Edinburgh Road. Patrick Rice was aged 40 years and worked as a rail labourer. His birth place was Armagh, Ireland.

Catherine Roaks' death certificate of 1872 recorded her as the widow of 'Peter Roaks Road Labourer'. 2 3

NAMES

Patrick and Peter are often interchangeable in Irish and Scottish culture.


Peter married Catherine VALLELY, daughter of VALLELY and Margaret BRYNES. (Catherine VALLELY was born about 1811 in County Armagh, Ireland 1 2 3 4 and died 27 July 1872 at 6.15 am in Cannonside (?) Street, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland 3.). The cause of her death was general debility over months.
