  General Notes:

In 1855 John Rock (sic) was the informant of his son John's birth on October 2 at Carfin. John was recorded as a brusher in a pit. He had been born in County Armagh, Ireland and was aged 26. he had married in Hamilton in 1854.

John was a coal miner according to the death certificate of his widow in 1868.


John married Helen VALLELY, daughter of John VALLELY and Mary ROCKS, on 8 October 1853 in St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Helen VALLELY was born about 1831 in County Tyrone, Ireland and died 9 September 1868 at 2.30 pm in Watson's Square, Newarthill, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was consumption over some years.


  Marriage Notes:

The proclamation of banns for this marriage were recorded in the IGI as having been on 2 October 1853 in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

The marriage itself took place in St Mary's RC Chapel in Hamilton as recorded in their book of marriages by Father Michael Condon:

' 8 October 1853
John Rocks and Ellen Vallely both of Carfin after due proclamation were married by me in the presence of John Vallely and Nancy Devlin
