Samuel was the youngest of his family, aged 1 year, when he was recorded by the 1851 census. He lived in Laurieston in the parish of Govan.

Samuel was listed in the family of Jean Porter when she applied for parish relief from Barony in 1861. He was aged 11 years and had been born at 35 King Street. He was working then in a stenographer's for 2/3d a week. 2 3
