Edward was only 4 months old when recorded by the 1881 census living in Camusnethan parish with his family. He was the son of Edward's second wife.

The 1891 census found Edward living at 4 Burnhall Row, Cambusnethan, the eldest of the six children living there. He was aged 10 years and a scholar. 1
