The 1871 census for New Monkland parish in Lanarkshire recorded Jane Campbell, aged 12 years and born in Airdrie, living at 76 Black Street, Rawyards, with her parents and siblings. No occupation was noted, nor was she a scholar.

The 1881 census recorded Jane Campbell living in her mother's household at 6 Buttery's Square in New Monkland parish. She was recorded as a weaver by occupation and aged 21 years. Her birthplace was Glenmavis Lanarkshire. ^{1 2}
