The 1871 census for New Monkland parish in Lanarkshire recorded Hugh Campbell, aged 7 years and born in Airdrie, living at 76 Black Street, Rawyards, with his parents and siblings. He was a scholar.

The 1881 census recorded Hugh aged 18 years living in his mother's household at 6 Buttery's Square in New Monkland parish. His birthplace was Rawyards, Lanarkshire and he was a coal miner. 1 2
