The 1881 census for St Cuthbert's parish Edinburgh recorded young William Bell living with his family, including his grandfather, and three lodgers, at 15 St Anthony Place. William was recorded as 10 years of age and had been born in Cramond near Edinburgh. He was the eldest son of the children recorded in the family. ^{2 3}
