Andrew Diack's birth certificate recorded that he was illegitimate. The informants of his birth were his mother, Helen Shand, and his father, James Diack, of Meikle Endowie in the parish of Alford Aberdeenshire. The birth was notified before John Smith, registrar, at Alford on 20 June 1876.

Andrew Diack was recorded by the 1881 census for Alford, Aberdeenshire, living with his mother and grandmother, and his half brother and sister, at 8 Village Road. He was 4 years of age and had been born in Alford.

The 1891 census for St Nicholas parish in Aberdeen recorded Andrew Diack living with his half sister and two half brothers at 26 Charlotte Street Aberdeen. Andrew had been born in Alford, Aberdeenshire, and was aged 14 years. He was recorded as the stepson of the head of the household, and was a message boy by occupation. 1 2 3
