"On 27 May 1474 Hugh Douglas (son of Henry and Margaret Douglas) granted to his kinsman James, first Earl of Morton, a formal renunciation of all right he or his heirs might have to the lordship of Dalkeith, under a penalty of £30,000, if he or his heirs repudiated the engagement, excepting such rights as might fall to him by inheritance. His brothers, Mr. James and John, were witnesses to the writ."
