  General Notes:

"In 1628, Sir George Johnston of Caskieben claimed connection with the Earldom through Sir James Garioch and his spouse Helen of Mar. It is possible, therefore, that she married again. This lady's history has been the subject of much controversy, but her marriage with Sir John Menteith, and the fact of her being King Robert's niece, are clearly stated in a charter of 5 April 1359 by King David II. in favour of her son. She had issue a son, Sir John Menteith, Lord of Arran, etc., who married a lady named Catharine (surname not discovered), but died apparently without issue. She also had a daughter Christian, married, first, to Sir Edward Keith of Synton, and secondly, some time after his death in 1350, to Sir Robert Erskine of that Ilk, with issue."

Elyne married Sir John MENTEITH Lord of Arran, Skipnish, Knapdale, and Strathgartney, son of John STEWART 'de Menteith' and Unknown, by 1323.1 (Sir John MENTEITH Lord of Arran, Skipnish, Knapdale, and Strathgartney was born about 1285.)

  Marriage Notes:

"She (Ellen) was married about 1320, or between that and 1323, to John, afterwards Sir John Menteith, Lord of Arran, Skipnish, Knapdale, and Strathgartney. The date is approximately fixed by a charter by King Robert I. granting to her as his niece and to John Menteith her husband, the lands of Strathgartney in free marriage, dated about 1323. These lands had belonged to Sir John Logie, and were taken away from him by forfeiture in 1320. Ellen of Mar's marriage, therefore, probably took place between these dates."
