She married John (I) Balliol, lord of Barnard Castle, in 1233 and by the 1240s the family had inherited large shares of the Huntingdon and Galloway estates, including lands scattered throughout Ayrshire, Lauderdale, Cunninghame, the Garioch, Fife, Lothian, and, in England, estates in Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Cumberland, Westmorland and Middlesex. The couple had eight children, four sons (Hugh (d.1271), Alan (d.a.1271), Alexander (d.1278), John (d.1314)) and four daughters (Margaret, Cecily, Eleanor, Ada). Dervorguilla is well-known for her foundation of Sweetheart Abbey (1273) near Dumfries, and for the completion of the foundation of Balliol College (1282), begun by her husband in the 1260s. She died on 28 January 1290 at Barnard Castle in County Durham and was buried at Sweetheart with the heart of her husband. A. Beam, The Balliol Dynasty, 1210-1364 (Edinburgh, 2008); G.P.
