Marey was recorded by the 1841 census for Rawyards in New Monkland as aged 11 years and having been born in Lanarkshire.

The 1851 census for New Monkland, Lanarkshire recorded Mary Obrien living at Mill Row with her mother and six brothers and sisters. She was recorded as age 21 years and had been born in New Monkland parish. She was a cotton carder.

On 12 October 1851 a 'Mary O'Brien' was a witness at the marriage of Hugh Hamill and Margaret McLaughlin at St Margaret's RC Chapel Airdrie. The second witness was Robert McLaughlin. 1 2
