General Notes:
John was a labourer at the iron works in 1869, and recorded as aged 23 years.
John O Donnall, father of the John, gave notice of his son's birth before the registrar at Holytown on 29 July 1870, and made his X mark. He was recorded as "Labourer at Furnace".
In 1871 the census for Chapelhall in the parish of Bothwell, Lanarkshire recorded John O'Donnell, head of the household, living at Biggar Road with his wife and small son, John. John was aged 25 years and had been born in Ireland. He was a blast furnace keeper.
The 1881 census for Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, recorded John, his wife and their three children living in Penman's Land, Biggar Road, Chapelhall, very near to Mary O'Donald's parents, and, separately, her brother, Patrick, and his family. John O'Donald, as the 1881 census named him, was aged 33 years, and had been born in Ireland. By occupation he was a furnace keeper, but out of employment.
James Patrick's father, John O'Donnell, who had been present where his son's death occurred, gave notice of the death at Holytown on 12 June 1884, and made his X mark. John O'Donnell was recorded in the death certificate as a railway labourer.
APPLICATION FOR POOR RELIEF
In 1888 John applied to the parish of Bothwell for poor relief, a summary of the details of which follows:
An application was made by John O'Donnell, residing at High Rows Chapelhall, aged 38 years. The date of liability for relief was 13 December 1888 and the amount 6/- a week.
John was a married man who had been born in Ireland and was a Roman Catholic. He worked as a furnaceman. He was 'wholly disabled', that is unable to work, on account of a liver complaint, and was 'wholly destitute', that is without financial means to support himself or his family.
His wife, Mary McGunnigal had been born in Ireland and was 36 years old. Their three children who were recorded at this date were Margaret born at Chapelhall on 12 June 1878; Mary born at Chapelhall on 27 October 1880; and John born at Chapelhall on 20 April 1884. Mary's parents were James McGunnigal, a labourer, deceased, and Margaret Harkins residing at Chapelhall.
John's parents were Neil O'Donnel, a farmer, now dead, and Margaret Mclaughlan, in America if living.

1889 July died on 15th ultimo.
When he died in 1889, John's death certificate recorded his occupation as 'labourer at iron works'. He was recorded as aged 37 years, probably on the low side, and married to Mary McGunnigal.
In 1892 John O'Donnell was recorded as a railway labourer in the death certificate of his 7 year old son John.
In the marriage certificate of his daughter Mary in 1901 John was recorded as a furnaceman.

John McGunnigal, John's brother in law, of High Rows, Chapelhall, gave notice of John's death before William Richard, registrar, at Holytown on 15 June 1889, and made his X mark.
John married Mary McGUNNIGAL (DNA Link), daughter of James McGUNNIGAL (DNA Linked) and Margaret HARKIN (DNA Linked), on 14 June 1869 in Chapelhall, Holytown district, Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Mary McGUNNIGAL (DNA Link) was born in 1849 in Ireland 4 9 and died 31 January 1919 at 8.30 pm in 13 Belhaven Buildings, Craigneuk, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was bronchitis.
Marriage Notes:
The marriage was celebrated according to the forms and rites of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest who married the couple was Father James Milne CC, and the witnesses were John McGunigal and Mary O'Donnel.
Mary McGunigal was an unmarried woman, who was aged 19 years and employed as a paper mill worker. She was of Bellside Row, Chapelhall.
John O'Donnel was aged 23 years. He was a bachelor, and a labourer at the iron works. He, too, was of Chapelhall. Both of his parents, Neil O'Donnell, a farmer, and Margaret McLauchlan, were deceased.
The marriage was registered in Holytown on 14 June 1869, William Richard being the registrar. 1
