In 1851 the census for Skene Parish, Aberdeenshire, recorded John Strachan living at Garlogie Wool Mill with his family and two visitors. John was recorded as 11 years of age and his birthplace as Skene Parish, Aberdeenshire. He was a scholar.

J. W. Strachan was one of the witnesses at the marriage of Catherine Strachan and John Webster in 1870. 2
